I'm nearly halfway finished with summer session, and I have to say, I like taking classes in the summer. The class is accelerated, you don't have time to procrastinate (I'm a master at this), and it's just all around more laid back. I'm taking 7 hours right now, but I kind of wish I would've taken another 3 since I'm not feeling bogged down whatsoever. Oh well.
I saw a preview for Disney's latest project, and can I just say that it would be nice if they could make more movies where the female lead is NOT a princess? Yeah, I know, every little girl wants to grow up to be a princess. Except for, you know, the one who don't. Like me. I wanted to be Chun Li (from
Streetfighters), Donatello (the turtle), or Xena (yeah, they called her "Warrior Princess" - doesn't count). Okay, I'll admit there was a time I wanted to be a mermaid, but that was because Ariel had red hair, like me, and liked to sing, like me, and swam all the time, like me. It had nothing to do with her being a princess.
On a kind of related note: pick a fandom, any fandom. Now picture your favorite character for that fandom.
More often than not, it seems like that character turns out to be male. Even in online character polls, women hardly ever beat out the men. Take the Steel Cage matches, for example. Not that there's anything wrong with loving male characters. Feminism isn't just about loving women; it's about loving men, too. But it makes me wonder. Are women oh-so-subtly conditioned to resent other women? Or do female characters simply tend to suffer when it comes to writing and characterization? (Keep in mind, I'm speaking in broad generalizations here.)
In an attempt to combat against this, here are a few shows in which my favorite character is female.
Veronica Mars - Veronica Mars
Farscape - Aeryn Sun
Robin Hood - Marian
Being Human - Annie
Gossip Girl - Blair Waldorf
Arrested Development - Maeby
That '70s Show - Jackie Burkhart
What are some of yours?
